Topic > Environmental Essay: The Destruction of Rainforests…

Rainforests are disappearing at a drastic rate. Industry is usually at the root of this destruction of one of nature's resources. Land is needed for highways, agriculture, livestock, or to expand a city. Other times the trees themselves are needed by lumber companies in countries that themselves do not have the necessary forests to meet the demands of their countries, such as Japan. Environmentalists regret this destruction, refuting that biodiversity is being lost, that an ancient way of life is being lost as "forest people" are forced from their homes, that new diseases are being fomented, and that the land is a living organism and man behave like a virus. Some third world countries slash and burn land to build roads or highways like the huge Brazilian highway. This highway stretches from one end of Brazil to the other. However, like many of these roads, it leads into the jungle and ends. Billions and billions of trees and animals are killed on these roads that lead to nowhere in the name of progress. Simple farmers have always cleared land for their crops. This damage is only minimal compared to what happens when large plantations are planted. Companies like Coca-Cola clear hundreds of acres to grow oranges. These oranges are then shipped back to the United States to be used in Minute Maid orange juice. Coca-Cola is not the only one, Tropicana, Ocean Spray and most concentrates contain rainforest oranges. The problem with using this land for farming is that all the nutrients are depleted within a year or two and by then they are dead. The earth is dead for centuries to come. Other times the land is needed for large herds of livestock. Without trees to protect the land from erosion by cows, this land is continuously trampled and the cattle also consume all the grass. Once it rains, the soil is further eroded, leaving the land barren and dead, requiring more trees to be cut down so the process can start again. The sad thing is that it's about cutting livestock prices. Restaurants like Burger King use rainforest beef as it is so cheap. Burger King is the best known of all rainforest beef eaters, but not the only one.
