Sonnet CXXX In our class we discussed sonnet cxxx. Many of my classmates believe that Shakespeare was saying that although this girl is ugly, he still loves her. While others argue that he wasn't making any statement about his appearance, but was instead being realistic. In my opinion, he was claiming that his girlfriend was a normal person and not a mythological goddess. Most people have heard on television or in movies, some guys tell his girlfriend that she has eyes as deep as the ocean or lips as soft as velvet. Even though they all seem very romantic, they are probably not true. In the first line of this sonnet, Shakespeare says "the eyes of his mistress are nothing like the sun." then he says that his lips are not red like coral, and that his skin is not white like snow. obviously he doesn't have white skin, no person has truly white skin. So to assume that he was stating that she was dark and bucket-lipped back then would be wrong. It cannot be said that because he says she is not one thing, he must imply that she is the opposite.
