Topic > Protection, reintegration and resettlement of internally displaced persons

Brief descriptionThe IDP project in Bosasso, Punt Land Somalia, was established in 2007 by the United Nations and with the aim of improving human security and living standards and providing solutions lasting with the reintegration and resettlement of internally displaced persons [ ] and repatriates to Bosaso, Somalia. (UN2008) The project was very strategic and contextual; and sought to identify the underlying problems in the area and create a solution based on existing opportunities and with limited financial funds obtained from NGOs. The project's goals were to create better ways to protect temporary and permanent settlements from violence; create better living conditions that provide access to basic services (including infrastructure, drinking water, education and health services); provide income generation opportunities and plan the resettlement of internally displaced persons to alternative rural lands. The project has helped thousands of internally displaced people and immigrants resettle and start a better life. Besides that, the project contributed to updating human knowledge in terms of educational training for internally displaced people, municipal workers and authorities. It also structured legal issues such as security of tenure which later became a reference for the rest of Somalia's municipalities. Its success has been replicated for other internally displaced people in Bosasso and other cities across the country. SitoBosaso is a city in the north-eastern region of Somalia. It is a commercial capital of the region and is an important seaport within the autonomous state of Puntland. The city has a population of 700,000 inhabitants and is the third largest in the country after Mogadishu [2] and Hargeisa. Due to its closer proximity to the war zone, it is a relatively peaceful part of the country. It is a place of attraction for immigrants affected by war...... middle of paper......014- Quero, Widmer, Aitken, Peterson, Safety and security: Bossaso, OCVP, 2011- UNHCR, July 2011b .
