16 years old in New York is a very special time for a teenager: they wait and wait for the opportunity to take the test drive and have the freedom to drive independently. In order for these teenagers to obtain their driving license, they must pass not only a written exam and a skills test, but also a visual exam. If these skills begin to deteriorate with age, would it be appropriate to revoke the driving licenses of older adults? When these elderly drivers enter the road with impaired senses, they pose a huge threat not only to themselves but also to other drivers and pedestrians. The risks and dangers of allowing these older drivers to drive are reason enough to require at least a retest on every skill required to drive. As drivers become older, the chance of being involved in a car accident nearly doubles, so to reduce the risk, all drivers over 65 must complete annual license renewal procedures which include driving ability tests , on sight, on hearing and on memory. Vision and its loss is one of the most common medical symptoms associated with aging and also appears to be the most important sense required for driving. Every senior citizen over the age of 65 must be tested for vision impairment to determine whether or not he or she has the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. These eye exams should be free as they are a natural result of the aging process. According to the Family Caregiver Alliance, “Nearly 3.5 million Americans over the age of 40 suffer from some degree of vision loss, most commonly due to age-related conditions” (Nesburn). Even at the age of 40, humans begin to suffer from vision loss, and the loss becomes more and more intense with age.
