In the eyes of God, we are all sinners. On July 8, 1741, John Edwards preached to his congregation that no matter what we do, God will send us to hell unless we shed our blood on the cross. Edwards' sermon was one of the most crucial, volatile and moving sermons that set the standard for hellfire and brimstone sermons. Edwards describes all of us as sinners and how our lives are dangerously in the angry hands of God. Even today we have pastors who preach hellfire and brimstone sermons. While 272 years separate John Edwards from modern shepherds, we can still see the eternal correlation stemming from John Edwards in modern shepherds. Edwards describes hell as the most horrible place and how no one is immune from falling into the cavity of hell. Edwards states, “their foot will slip in due time (Edwards).” Our lives hang by a thin thread above the pits of hell. Such a contrary view from a preacher must be taken seriously.
