Comedy in A Midsummer Night's Dream"why do they run away? This is rascality on their part to frighten me." (3.1.99) This is a quote from Shakespeare's play "A Midsummer Night's Dream". In this quote, the speaker, Bottom, wonders why everyone is afraid of him. He doesn't realize that as a joke, a trickster Puck, put a donkey's head on his shoulders. This causes all his companions to become afraid of him and flee. This is an example of the comedy involved in this play. This essay will show you that A Midsummer Night's Dream is a play composed mostly of comedy. The funniest part of this comedy seems to be when Puck, the trickster, keeps confusing the people he is assigned to put the love juice on himself. . Even when he put the juice of love in the eyes of the right people, sometimes they still fell in love with the wrong people. Puck's first example of this mistake is when he puts love juice in Lysander's eyes, mistaking him for Demetrius. Oberon tells Puck to put the juice of love in the eyes of an Athenian man, Demetrius, and to make sure that the first thing he sees after this is the woman he hates, but who loves him so much, Helena. Puck ends up finding Lysander and Hermia, lovers, sleeping on the forest floor. He puts love juice in Lysander's eyes and leaves. Then Elena and Demetrius arrive in this place. They are still arguing and Demetrius leaves her with Lysander and Hermia sleeping. Helena notices them there and tries to wake Lysander. Lysander wakes up and the first thing he sees is Elena. "And run through the fire for the sake of your sweat. Helen transparent! Nature shows art, that through your breast makes me see your heart."(2.2.103). This is what Demetrius says to Helena when he sees her. He fell in love with her. This is where the comedy of this love mix begins. Now Helena is confused and thinks that Lysander is playing a trick on her, so she runs away. This is a particularly funny part of the play and these exchanges with lovers seem to be the funniest bits of the play. Another funny section of this play is when Puck puts a donkey's head on Bottom's shoulders..
