Topic > Effective Classroom Management - 1804

The success of both teachers and students can often be traced back to the teacher's ability to effectively manage the classroom. Research shows that effective classroom management and organization during the first few weeks of class is crucial in determining the expectations, behavior patterns, and procedures that will set the tone for the rest of the year. Effective classroom management is essential to maintaining an organized and civil classroom. You want students to develop an understanding of mutual respect by making expectations clear and providing written ideas about how the classroom should be run. The keys to effective classroom management are; organizing procedures and resources, a well-organized classroom environment, monitoring student progress, anticipating and managing classroom problems, and designing an effective learning center. By providing these classroom management skills you will manage any class clearly and effectively and go above and beyond expectations. Organizing procedures and resources is the first management skill to focus on when developing an effective classroom management plan. From day one it is important to go over the daily procedures with the students by offering an example of daily activities. Create a sample daily schedule for students to review and ask questions. Let students know if the schedule is subject to change. For example, if your class takes elective courses, make sure your students understand that they will have no art every day from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. The key is for your students to be prepared. Before the first day of class your class should be properly organized with teaching aids and resources......half of paper......or provide materials and activities for students based on their needs, interests and abilities at the appropriate difficulty level. It is also important to evaluate students based on prior expectations. It is important not to set expectations that have not been discussed before completing the task. In conclusion, there are many steps to creating effective classroom management. It is important to stay organized, communicate with your students, organize an effective classroom that meets your students and the expectations you place on them, monitor student progress, be proactive and handle problems as they arise, and design a center of effective learning. All of these functions are essential to running an effective classroom. Without these steps the classroom will not function properly and the learning environment created will not promote effective learning.
