In this essay I will discuss whether British female directors find it easier to make a documentary rather than a fictional feature film in the current British film industry. I will refer to the opinions and films of Kim Longinotto, Carol Morley, Clio Barnard and Alison Stirling. I will also look at statistics from film festivals and the British Film Institute and interviews with various British female directors. I will argue that documentaries are easier to make because they are less expensive to make and don't require a large crew. I will try to demonstrate that female directors are less likely to get financing for a fiction feature film because the people who make the decisions in terms of granting financing for fiction feature films are men, and therefore have a male perspective, so think that a "female subject" will likely attract a large audience and will not do well financially. I will also examine the ways in which films are shown to audiences and whether those who select films to screen at the festival have an effect on a film's commercial success. I will therefore argue that because there are very few women in positions of power in terms of financing and distributing fiction feature films, female directors find it easier to make documentary feature films as documentaries do not require as large a budget as fiction feature films. movie.
