The tragedy of Leila in Bone How much responsibility should a child have towards his family? In “Bone,” by Fae Myenne Ng, a character named Leila is born the daughter of a loving mother, Mah, and an outcast father who cursed Leila with the last name Fu. As Leila herself said, "Fu in our dialect sounds like the word bitter" (18). She became the eldest with two other sisters, Ona and Nina, both descendants of Mah's second husband, Leon. Leon loves his biological daughters like a real father should; meanwhile, Leon also loves Leila, his only daughter from his marriage to Mah.
