Communication is the interaction between individuals and is an important skill to use within the children and young people workforce. The structure of communication is used by transmitting a message, receiving the message and responding to the message which is an essential and basic life skill. There are different types of communication, which are: verbal communication and non-verbal communication. The reason people communicate is to express/represent our feelings and needs. We also need to communicate to build positive relationships with other professionals, children/young people and their families. Another reason we communicate is to understand each other and learn from each other by sharing ideas/information and experiences. Verbal communication allows people to communicate face to face in a sense. The main key points of verbal communication are words, sound, speech and language. There are two different types of verbal communication: formal and informal. The different types of nonverbal communication people use: Body language/Posture – Show your feelings and attitudes. Gestures: Gestures include pointing, waving, and using your fingers to specify number amounts. Paralinguistic: includes factors such as pitch, inflection, tone of voice and volume. Proximity (space): People often need personal space. The personal distance of space needed in casual conversation is between 18 inches and 4 feet.
