“Our Biggest Enemy” Food is a source of fuel for the human body, like water and air it allows humans to live, but what happens when food becomes our enemy? People try to eat healthy, but the food considered junk food is usually white bread, crackers, sugary pastries, sugary carbonated drinks and frozen foods, these are very unhealthy snacks for the human body. Junk food makes the human body weak and inactive compared to other foods that will provide energy such as fruits and vegetables. People know that junk foods are high in sugar, fat and salt, yet they continue to buy and eat them. The way the food industry produces food is unhealthy and dangerous due to the ingredients and chemicals in the food. The way the food industry uses advertising to promote the product it is selling to future consumers. While there are advertisements promoting healthy eating and organic snacks, they are not as numerous and tend to target a smaller audience. The food industry is unethical due to the chemicals used in its products and advertising that manipulates consumers into buying junk food products. Junk food appears to be a delicious snack to replace a meal you may have skipped that day, plus eating that bag of chips seems harmless but no, it's all a lie! Behind junk food is crazy science. Michael Moss, the author of the article “The Amazing Science of Addictive Junk Food,” interviews a man named Steven Witherly, a food scientist. According to Moss, Witherly says, “If something melts quickly, your brain thinks it has no calories…you keep eating” (487). For example, both Lays chips and Cheetos puffs melt in your mouth quickly. Lay's slogan is “You can't eat just one” because the chips melt in your mouth and the flavor goes with them, people want to keep eating.
