When it comes to the issues faced by all Americans, you generally have few choices to align yourself with. You can decide to lean to the right, taking a conservative point of view: believing in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, etc. with major parties such as the Republican Party and the Peace and Freedom Party. Alternatively, you can stay on the left, taking the more liberal path: supporting ideals such as government action and equal opportunity. These parties include the Democratic Party and the Green Party. However, this is not a black and white separation between conservatives and liberals, rather a circular spectrum that goes to the far left, to the far right, and back together. Therefore, there are many positions one can take on a given issue. Health care is one of those issues where the political spectrum shows some overlap. Both sides want the same outcome: a healthy and happy society. However, the ways in which they wish to achieve this vary greatly. Republicans are adamantly opposed to government-organized health care. They believe that the less government the better, believing that "government-run affordable health care leads to inefficiencies and can be disastrous to the health of the nation as a whole." They believe health care should be left up to doctors, HMOs, and insurance companies to decide and manage. However, Democrats' main point about health care is that it should be funded and controlled by the government for the people. They believe that all people should be able to have certainty in their health without worrying about losing coverage or going into debt. This would be most effective for the poor and elderly, those who normally couldn't afford coverage and would need it most. As such, Med...... middle of paper ......atform, 2004."
