Most people grow up dreaming of becoming an actor, singer, or professional athlete. They want to be famous, for people to know their name, and they probably also want to earn a large sum of money. While getting into one of these professions is next to nothing, there is a career that can offer some of the same exciting opportunities. A graphic designer is an interesting job because it allows for creativity and artistry, combines designing with business and marketing, and offers the opportunity to become famous in the field. Louise Horton once summed up the graphic designer's job description by referring to him or her as "the architect of the printed page" (Horton). Graphic designers can be credited with the marketing design of every magazine, book, advertisement and poster that has ever hit the business world (Horton). However, designers have a bigger goal than simply making beautiful works of art for the public to see. The work done by a graphic designer is usually synonymous with propaganda. Their job is to try to make people feel a certain way about an object or topic (Horton). The idea is to put together colours, words and images to represent an idea that can be easily recognized and remembered by the public. (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). The designer must also be very flexible and willing to accept criticism, because ultimately, his design must be what the client wants. Doing research is very important in this field because you need to understand what the objective is and how the client wants his idea to be presented to the public. However, this profession represents a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate creativity and originality and this can be seen most clearly through the freelance designer. A fr...... middle of paper ...... the increase in merchandise marketing at supermarkets and other merchandisers (Gordon). On the contrary, a decline is expected for print publishing (Johnston). Overall, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates there will be a 13% increase in employment of graphic designers (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). In Graphic Design, it's about choosing the area that works best for you. Becky Ponder, a graphic designer at the University of Illinois, said, “A job that focuses only on design, rather than communications and marketing, may be more interesting but will require more work.” One person might really shine in the artistic side of the job while another excels in the marketing area. No matter which sector of the industry is under stress, one thing is certain. Whether the work is done individually or with a design firm, there are always new and exciting opportunities.
