Throughout European history, kings and dictators have been known for their unquenchable thirst for power and complete domination; the lure of absolute supremacy and total loyalty was too tempting to ignore. Some made their way through birthright, others by planning their path through politics. But none are as infamous as that of Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte. Both Napoleon and Caesar achieved great glory by leading their countries out of the turmoil that followed the revolutionary eras, using their political and military support as well as their exceptional warfare tactics. Although Caesar achieved major accomplishments, Napoleon receives the most praise for his work in creating efficient government systems, along with his military exploits. Together, both men reshaped their countries and re-ordered their empires, while remaining pro-people. Julius Caesar was born during Rome's instability: the element of disorder ruled the Republic, which discredited his nobility and could not maintain control over Rome's considerable size and influence. After the death of Rome's dictator, Sulla, Caesar returned from military service and organized a private army to attack Mithridates VI Eupator, king of Pontus, who was an enemy of Rome. Shortly thereafter, Caesar began working with Pompey, a former lieutenant who served under Sulla but had changed positions after the dictator's death. Around 68 BC Caesar was elected quaestor (basic political position). Eight years later, in 60 BC, Julius served as governor of the Roman province of Spain.
