Over time the flexibility of different languages in today's world is always thrown up in the air, whether there are disadvantages or advantages to being capable of more of a language. While all individuals have their own opinions on the ability to speak different languages fluently, there is no other way to look at it other than it being a huge advantage; fully appreciating the advantageous possibility of being bilingual or trilingual and sometimes even more. Communicating with more than a single voice will represent who you are and where you come from. Within two articles “Speaking in Tongues” written by Zadie Smith and “How to tame a Wild Tongue” by Gloria Anzalduas, both demonstrate the different languages they encounter. Smith loses the ability to speak with his voice forced to change without resistance while Anzalduas aggressively fights to keep his voice. Acceptance of various languages does not fit into all categories, however over time we should be more accepting and realize from articles like these that it is useful to learn and accept the different languages of different cultures in the world today. While there may be difficulties in learning something new, it is nothing but a benefit to have one for life! Being familiar with several different languages is definitely not one of the easiest things to do. As you grow up and experience different opportunities to learn different cultures, you can't pass it on. Having knowledge of different languages will offer the possibility of having much more culture within the main culture and the one they are opening up to. People with culture know the world and the life they live. Additionally, it would allow you to travel to places and countries around the world. Being aware of the backgrounds of different cultures will open a door with different opportunities throughout one's life. Discovering different cultures will lead around the world giving individuals the chance to learn about lifestyles in completely different ways. “Wild tongues cannot be tamed, they can only be cut off.” (Anzaldua) I like this statement in writing my essay simply because it represents that he will continue to remain faithful to his language throughout his life.
