Chopin uses the character of Mrs. Mallard to represent the inequality of that time and the tranquility that can be found in freedom. Chopin leaps from the confines of confinement to the euphoria of freedom, employing two contrasting themes to highlight each other. Furthermore, Chopin uses a house to illustrate Mrs. Mallard's confinement and the outside world to paint a picture of dangerous freedom. Finally, the point of view chosen by Chopin, the third person omniscient, allows us to see everything as it happens and to understand Mrs. Mallard's mind. In summary, Chopin's challenge to society's opinions may have been a risk at the time, but “The Story of an Hour” is still a timeless piece of literature with relationships even to today's times.
