Literary Analysis Essay "The Kugelmass Episode" offers a satisfying look at the world of adultery, along with plenty of humor to hold the reader's attention. Humor is not used just for entertainment purposes, but rather to have leeway on the implications of the story as a whole. The plot of the story revolves around a relationship that the main character wishes to have, and the humor that the story conveys allows the reader to clearly understand the meaning of the story and why the humor is vital to the main character's actions. The beginning of “The Kugelmass Episode” is particularly fun and brings a lot of meaning to the unfolding of the story. The main character, Sidney Kugelmass, is noticeably despondent with his current wife. The Great Persky (the magician) opens the door and Kugelmass is stunned by what Persky tells him. Persky points to a locker and tells Kugelmass that he can send him to any novel he chooses by touching the locker to him and the novel inside. Again, the idea that taking the easy way out can lead to a dead end is appropriate to apply here as Kugelmass is willing to do such a foolish yet simplistic act to have an affair with his wife. Kugelmass is precise in his choice and states: “And Emma Bovary? It seems perfect to me.” (Allen 349) With three quick taps on the cabinet, Kugelmass is released into the novel and appears in the bedroom of Emma and her husband, Emma confessing that she wishes to leave her spouse as well. At this point in the story, both main characters want to be in relationships and the signs are that there will be trouble from here on out. Not only is Kugelmass deceitful and devious towards his wife, but he is also creating a dilemma in the book Madame Bovary. Kugelmass' lack of intelligence and desire for love cause the novel based in French to be altered. “I can't think through this,” said one Stanford professor. "First a strange character called Kugelmass, and now she's disappeared from the book." (Allen 354) Kugelmass didn't take into account the consequences he might face before jumping into the book with Emma and the thought of always using his best judgment obviously didn't factor into Kugelmass' decision. Going back to the humor at the beginning of the story, Kugelmass's decision to have an affair is now influencing the actual novel Madame Bovary. Kugelmass can now influence the events of the story and can alter how the story is told, not to mention others who read Madame Bovary will notice quite a bit.
