Cymbeline's Mighty Imogen Shakespeare's Cymbeline developed a female protagonist who led the literary world as one of the original heroines. Centuries before women were recognized as capable and authoritative, a character who carries these qualities is presented on stage, thus representing the ideals of the future. Shakespeare bravely portrayed a woman warrior in a male-dominated society. Imogene, the daughter of King Cymbeline, is in fact the central character of this comedy. He faces a storm of obstacles to conquer and reveal the evil deeds of the play's antagonists and to complete its hero's journey. A nineteenth-century actress who once played this leading role suggested titling the play Imogen, Princess of Britain.1 One critic described Shakespeare's Cymbeline as tragic-comic-historical-pastoral, for the play exhibits qualities of each category and taps into every emotion. . The story is set during a conflict between the British king Cymbeline and Caesar Octavius of Rome. The matriarch of Cymbeline is tainted by the evil queen and her arrogant prince Cloten, predestined to marry Princess Imogen. However, Imogen cannot bear the arrangement and so chooses to marry her Roman lover instead. Her imprisonment begins a series of ironic events that are so common in Shakespeare's plays, such as when Imogen dresses as a man as in A Midsummer Night's Dream or when she drinks sedative poison as in Romeo and Juliet. Imogene ends the play by revealing all the truths hidden inside the palace, while Octavian Caesar withdraws his attack on Great Britain. Imogen's words and actions generated responses among all the characters who appeared in the play and unraveled various conflicts in Roy......middle of paper......The Janes, a 1997 film in which the woman Jordan O'Neil shaves off all his hair. her hair and demands to be treated like a man as she endures Navy SEAL training. Both Imogen and ONeil relied on their dignity of character while their physical identities were stripped from them. Many other important women in literature display assertive, noble, and valiant traits, yet Imogen was first introduced in 1623, making her an original heroine. Imogen's strength of spirit could only guide the world when her character escaped the imprisonment of the ink and entered the hearts of women. Women's rights movements and Sisterhood organizations stole the spirit of Shakespeare's princess and used it to eradicate gender prejudice, thus affirming female power and integrity. Thanks to their commitment, the role of women no longer exists in the background or off stage, but at the center of the show.
