Topic > It's time to put an end to sexting - 1106

Jesse Logan was a girl who had just graduated from high school when she was humiliated by her ex-boyfriend to an unforgivable state. She sent a full-frontal naked photo of herself to her then-boyfriend, which is now known as sexting. After their breakup, her ex-boyfriend forwarded Jesse's message to the entire school, causing her embarrassment and humiliation. He then gave an interview on the Today Show stating, "I just want to make sure no one else has to go through this again." Two months later she was found in her bedroom. She hanged herself. As a nation, how will we be able to implement a policy that works sufficiently? I believe that through annual educational assemblies in elementary schools in grades four through six, in middle schools in grades seven through nine, and in high schools in grades ten through twelfth, there will be a recognition by the student body of exactly what privacy is, what sexting is and how it can harm your future with just a click of the “send” button. Understanding exactly what sexting is will be crucial for students. This will be the most applicable and effective way to reduce the number of sexting in the United States. Sexting can be defined by the Urban Dictionary as "the act of sending text messages to someone in the hope of having a sexual encounter with them later; initially casual, progressing to highly suggestive and even sexually explicit" (Urban Dictionary). “Initially casual” and “highly suggestive” can mean anything from a sexual innuendo to sending, receiving, or possessing nude photos of someone. This definition will be the basis for annual assemblies that will be implemented in schools across the nation. Initially for the group of students I...... middle of paper ......child pornography use is the only real law being broken. There is no law for adult pornography, only the consequences of sexting that need to be taught to young people. Considering the growing number of individuals engaging in sexting in the United States, this issue must be addressed. She had ruined lives, like Jesse Logan, who was a bright young girl who had no reason to take her own life. There can be an easily implementable policy that educates today's students, to teach them exactly what sexting is and how it can tarnish one's reputation and future. This will include annual assemblies in schools divided into three groups: four to six, seven to nine and ten to twelve. Hopefully the educational process of this will make students think twice before hitting the "send" button on their phone when thinking about texting someone.
