The Robber BaronsWhen the names Carnagie, Rockefeller, and Pullman come to mind, most of us automatically think of what we have seen or read in our history books: "These men were gentle and generous and hard work and perseverance, each of you could become a success story like them,” right? Wrong. I'm tired of these people being remembered for the two or three "good deeds" they did. Publicity and the media exaggerated the generosity of these men, the government ruined these names with false lies, and the people were blind to see that these men were ruthless and cunning businessmen, motivated by money and their struggle for power. George M. Pullman is best remembered for his contributions to the railroad industry through the invention of his Pullman cars. Automobiles sold well and the railroad industry flourished thanks to this new invention. While success is tied to his name, not many people know the real truth behind this robber baron. His greed for money led him to extreme measures as his workers were severely mistreated and subjected to severe restrictions. For example, each worker had to live in his village (Pullman, IL) and under no circumstances was anyone allowed to leave. People had to shop at his store, pay him rent and go to work every day. People who did not comply were heavily penalized by having their name written in the black book (which meant that this worker could not find work in any other industrial field). So many stories...
