The quality of education provided in today's schools has declined since the idea of schools was born. Currently students graduate without knowing how to read or write. The blame falls on teachers, the government, and every American citizen for not speaking out to bring about change sooner. Only in more recent years has there been a desire to change the system. (Sharma) It is argued that there are 4 critical elements for the effectiveness of the teaching process: 1. the student, 2. the teacher, 3. the home and 4. the academic programs and physical facilities of the school. These are interdependent and interactive and must work in unison for effective teaching to occur. The teacher's primary responsibility is to help the student grow intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially. Therefore, teachers should be competent, dedicated and committed to the teaching profession and serving students. Teachers should have adequate academic and professional preparation and the required character characteristics. Teachers should be respected, appreciated and sumptuously remunerated to enable them to devote themselves with total concentration to the task of teaching. A home where education is valued contributes immeasurably to the quality of a child's learning. Finally, the school should have innovative, creative, differentiated and challenging academic programs."
