Schmitt uses a lot of emotional appeal to show that the family is hurt. “The night before, my husband Gregg had seen our neighbors crying in the hallway. We wondered if old grandfather, the one with the crew cut, was dead (Schmitt107). He also uses formal writing to clarify what happened to the family. “I deflected the offer, using the words I had learned for “I don't want to bother you.” I knew that Chinese people often extended invitations just to be polite. My job was to refuse. Yet they persisted and persisted, which made me wonder if they were really asking me to attend my grandfather's funeral. They said it would mean a lot to the deceased, I hesitated. And when they told me that everyone who attends will also live a long life, I finally agreed” (Schmitt 110). Schmitt uses the feelings of all the families and how they feel about her coming to the funeral to show that they wanted her to come and that it would mean a lot to the funeral.
