Like sheep led to the slaughter; This is one of the most famous analogies used to refer to the Jews during the Holocaust. Day after day Jews were systematically murdered, beaten and mistreated and there was almost no refusal on their part. Almost no one reacted. This, however, was not the case in the Warsaw Ghetto. During the summer of 1942, nearly 300,000 Jews were deported from the Warsaw Ghetto to the Treblinka extermination camp. During the summer, a resistance organization known as ZOB was formed. It was led by 23-year-old Mordecai Anielewicz and was composed mostly of young men. The deportations stopped in September and the ZOB began collecting all the weapons it could smuggle into the ghetto. In January 1943 the deportations resumed. While the Nazis expected everything to go smoothly, as always, this time they surprisingly encountered resistance. While they were carrying out the roundup, the ZOB attacked. After a couple of days, German troops had killed many Jews, but were forced to retreat, giving resistance fighters the impetus to continue resisting. They began to plan, strategize, and prepare for a full-scale revolution. On the night of April 18, 1943, the Jews of the Warsaw Ghetto received news that the Nazis were planning a final roundup of the ghetto for the following day. The ZOB did everything it could to plan for the next day. They organized hideouts for the Jews of the ghetto and assigned fighting positions to members of the resistance. The next day, April 19, 1943, the Nazis arrived to conduct the final roundup and the most famous armed resistance of the Holocaust began (ushmm.org).
