Driving StereotypesThere is a lot of debate about whether or not older adults should be able to drive. Most people who have had encounters with terrible older drivers would say no. That's because they've had one or maybe even two experiences with a not-so-cautious older driver. This experience led them to create a stereotype about all older people and their driving abilities. After reading and analyzing all four older women from the four works in A Writer's Reader. The authors of each have included many different stereotypes of older women. Just like the stereotype of older people's driving ability is not true for all older drivers. The Author's stereotypes are not always true for every older woman. The authors are simply informing their readers about the many different stereotypes that are floating around. O'Connor gave the old woman in his writings many characteristics of an old lady. The grandmother in O'Connor's work is stubborn. The family is taking a trip to Florida. Which he doesn't want to go to and pushes his son to change his mind every chance he gets. Most older adults are stubborn, from wanting to get their own way to not wanting to admit health problems like hearing loss. Grandma also seems to be a burden on the family. For example, the granddaughter says “he has to go wherever we go” (O'Connor 448). Older women are often stereotyped as a burden. Their family members welcome them and don't realize how much of an obstacle they can be. During this trip the families stop to eat in a restaurant. Similar to the older women I know, O'Connor has her grandmother talk to the restaurant owner about the good old days. He argued about who was to blame for the situations they were in today (451). I listened to my grandmother's stories and listened to her discuss with her friends how things were in their time. For this reason I have thought many times about the stereotype of older people discussing things from the past, presented by O'Connor. I try to understand why they tell me the same story again, bad in their time. Older women can sometimes disguise their old appearance. Doing this helps them avoid some stereotypes, which would mostly involve things like appearance.
