One of the most controversial topics in politics today is what to do about illegal immigration into the United States. Should we consider all illegal immigrants criminals? Should we give them full citizenship rights? These are all important issues related to illegal immigration. In 1986, the Immigration Reform and Control Act made it illegal for employers to knowingly hire undocumented workers and imposed fines of up to $11,000 for each violation. Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill, titled H.R. 4437 (The Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005). Just recently, due to massive overpopulation, the problem of illegal immigration began to be taken really seriously in the capital of our country. There is one thing that all sides of the debate agree on: that America needs to get tougher in policing our country's borders. Today, up to 12 million people live illegally in the United States. This number is growing rapidly and rapidly overpopulating our backyards. For these reasons, I believe we should support this bill and hope that the Senate agrees as well. HR 4437 will take many drastic measures in an effort to slow illegal immigration. Some of the main points of this law include the construction of a 700 mile wall/fence along the US-Mexico border, custody of illegal aliens detained by local authorities in hopes of eliminating catch and release, and also enforcement of stricter laws on employers of those who employ illegal immigrants. In recent weeks there has been much discussion about what to do with illegal immigrants already in the country. There are already reviews going on and I agree with what they are trying to say, they will have no reason to come. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining what to do with all the illegal immigrants already present and what to do to protect our borders. Without any changes, our country will be in bad shape in the near future. We must act and put an end to all this illegal immigration once and for all. WORKS CITED • Cullen, Lisa.
