Topic > Infill buildings in the historical map of Nicosia

This thesis focuses on the research of infill buildings in the historical map of Nicosia, Cyprus. Over the centuries, Cyprus has been ruled by many other governments. Initially with the Roman Empire, the Byzantines, the French Lusignan dynasty and the Venetians ruled the island until the conquest of the Ottoman Empire. The history of Cyprus encompasses the characteristics of all these civilizations as a cultural mosaic. In the urban context, one of the most important elements of these cultures that have survived to this day in Nicosia are the Venetian walls around the city. After the division of the island, with the change of economic centers, the city center moved outside the walls. Nowadays, in Nicosia, most of the inhabitants of the walled city are immigrants or low-income people. Especially after the 1990s, while most natives moved outside the walls, immigrants began to move inside the walls, due to low rents. On the other hand, some of the historic buildings were destroyed after the war and new "modern" buildings were built. build to replace them. The purpose of this article is to evaluate those new constructions according to their environment and propose design problems according to infill design methodologies. During this research, the effects of immigrants, Nicosia's needs and designer-related problems should also be discovered. The analysis will be used in conjunction with the literature review.
