Value of an EducationIn today's society, education is very important. Education has evolved greatly over time and has shaped American society. In the past, education wasn't as important because many jobs didn't have educational requirements. In those days you could have a high school diploma and get a good job. Today, if you only have a high school diploma, the types of jobs you can get include fast food or maybe construction jobs. Getting your college degree is essential to your financial success and your ability to find a good, well-paying job. Before entering college in the fall, I felt like it was going to be very challenging for me because of what my friends who were already attending college told me. I feel like high school as a whole doesn't prepare you for college level work. Many people in high school study little or may not study at all and still manage to maintain an A average. At the college level you cannot study very little and expect to get the same results. If high schools better prepared students for college, there would be more college students making it to their second year of college instead of dropping out. Another big difference between high school and college is the fact that in college there is a lot of freedom. You're so tight in high school that you're forced to do things you're not forced to do in college. For example, in high school, if you don't go to class, your parents will be notified. In college you are on your own and have to make the decision to go to class as planned. I think this is one of the main reasons why students fail out of college. Many 18- and 19-year-olds see that most classes don't take into consideration... middle-of-the-paper education... very well, so it's only right that the University of Kentucky does the same. Values teach us that we can reach as high as we can, instead of cutting ourselves short. The University offers the highest standards of achievement that enable students to realize their full potential. I believe the University of Kentucky is a good school that helps every student be the best they can be." A school that operates with a set of values that ensure a common and consistent code of respectful and responsible behavior makes a significant difference. Students learn much better when they are part of a school that consciously applies values education policies, behavioral strategies, and teaching programs that employ qualified teachers who can discuss values-related issues in all areas of the curriculum."
