Grace HavranANT 352Prof. HrubyApril 29, 2014The Mayans: They Slaughtered People to DeathThe Mayans are perhaps one of the best-known civilizations in Mesoamerica. They are best known for their highly controversial calendar, which many believed prophesied the end of the world. However, they are much more than just people who created a calendar. A SOMETHING EPIC PHRASE. I chose my article on the giant Mayan stucco frieze because it showed another side of Mayan culture that wasn't centered on their famous Mayan calendar. The Maya are a people located both in southern Mexico in the provinces of Chiapas and Tabasco, and in northern Central America which now consists of Yucatan, Guatemala and Belize. The entire area amounts to 900 kilometers from north to south and 550 kilometers from east to west. The Maya region is divided into three different areas; the northern Maya lowlands, the central Maya lowlands, and the southern Maya highlands. The climates in each area vary greatly. The climate of the northern Maya lowlands varies most among the three regions. The northwestern part of the region is one of the driest in the Maya region, while the northeast receives a fair amount of rainfall. The central Maya region receives rainfall and contains tropical and subtropical areas with many lakes. The southern Maya highlands are, in general, cool and covered in dense vegetation and volcanoes. SOMETHING ABOUT Guatemala. The history of the Maya people is usually divided into five different periods: the preclassic era from 1800 BC to 250 AD, the classical era from 250 AD to 900 AD, the postclassic era from 900 AD to 1500 AD, the colonial period from 1500 AD to 1800 AD and the post-colonial period from 1821 to the present (ISCED FRO...... half of the document ......ve and maintain a stable environment so that people might be able to visit the site, it is said, however until then the entrance tunnel has been buried to keep it away from moisture, climate, and possible looters. What makes the Maya civilization so fascinating is that, compared to other Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya were never truly united in political terms. What the Maya had were a series of city-states independent of each other, but united by a culture similar, yet none ever became large enough to unite the Maya into a single empire; like all other Mesoamerican civilizations, the Maya civilization can be defined by a series of growth and decline, but what makes the Maya (ADJ) different from other Mesoamerican civilizations is that the Mayan people are still present and thriving today.
