In February 2014, the Winter Olympic Games were held in Sochi, Russia. This event was an opportunity to talk about many issues happening in Russia. The Sochi Winter Olympics were characterized by controversial games, especially in the fields of human rights and environmental protection. This recent event brings us to the general case of the Olympic spirit and how it was created by people from all over the world. The Olympic spirit is also a part of the Olympic Games which constitute a huge gathering of people from all over the world. To what extent can the Olympic Games be considered a case of post-colonialism? This question will be answered through a definition of post-colonialism adapted to the case of the Olympics. Subsequently, some historical facts from the history of the Olympics will be related to the concept of culture. To conclude, the effects of the Olympics on the host countries will be considered and how these countries use the Olympics as a tool will be studied.I) A definition of postcolonialism through the concept of the Olympics1) Olympic identityIdentity is an aspect of postcolonialism . According to Oxford Dictionary it is composed of “characteristics that determine who or what a person or thing is”. As everyone knows, there are many types of characteristics that can determine who or what a person or thing is. But you can focus on the particular ones. In fact, there are two main components of identity that go into analyzing a person or thing. The first are socio-demographic characteristics which include “characteristics such as gender, age, ethnic group, family size or employment status”. In conclusion, the postcolonial notion related to the Olympic Games has been studied to demonstrate that the Olympic Games, even if they represent a kind of colonization, could sometimes have been used as a postcolonial tool to make people think differently about socio-political cases. As the Winter Games approach, the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, has fully embraced the idea of using the Olympics to help him succeed in parts of his role as President. Thus, before the Olympics, to improve relations with Western countries, he decided to free his imprisoned opponents. But then he also realized that once the Games were over, he might deliberately invade the Crimean peninsula.
