The novel Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte is a coming-of-age story. This dark gothic novel shows Jane always facing problems and never giving up. In the novel we meet Jane when she is a young teenager and see how much she grows by throwing the book away. She obviously grows psychically as she becomes an adult, but we also see her grow mentally and emotionally. This novel deals with the real-life struggle of a woman at this age and the challenges she must overcome. This story shows how strong Jane's will is. The first part of the story that I believe shows Jane's coming of age is when she leaves Lowood in hopes of finding something better for herself. Before coming to Lowood she lived with her aunt Reed where she was constantly abused by others. At Lowood she recovered and realized the good in people as well as herself. She met Helen who made her realize there is hope. Additionally, meeting Mrs. Temple made her realize that there is good in people. Even though Helen had a difficult life, she always had a smile on her face and said she should too. She soon became a teacher and admired Mrs. Temple. While teaching LoWood she felt like she was stuck in the same place going nowhere and needed to get out. “I went to my window, opened it and looked out. There were the two wings of the building. There was the garden; there were Lowood skirts; there was the hilly horizon. My eye went beyond all the other objects to rest on the most remote ones, the blue peaks: they were the ones I wanted to climb; everything within their boundary of rock and health seemed like prison grounds, limits of exile. (Bronte 105). This part here shows that Jane feels like she's stuck in this place and wants to get out. He sees the beautiful... center of the card... like this and just wanted to leave it in his past. It was believed that a woman should listen to everything that a man tells her. It is a woman's duty to take on social norms such as cooking and cleaning, but Jane had her own opinion on what she should do. Jane always pushed boundaries and wouldn't let a man control her. I give her a lot of credit for abandoning and breaking social molds. In conclusion, there are many parts in the story where Jane really proved herself to be a strong woman. This novel is the coming-of-age story of a young girl who came from nothing and became a strong woman. Jane Eyre persevered through much suffering and struggle only to emerge in the end a better person. When it comes to leaving Lowood, facing Aunt Reed, and leaving Mrs. Rochester, Jane has faced obstacles and ultimately come out bigger and better..
