Baptism: The First Influential Sacrament Baptism is one of the first rites of passage a person may face. It usually happens during the first two months after a baby is born. Baptism is a sacrament that cleanses and removes original sin and personal guilt, which leads a person to Christianity. It comes from the Greek word “baptizein” which means to wash or immerse. During the Baptism ceremony, the person will become a believer in Christ and accept the grace of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is not only the beginning of growth, but is its symbol. Baptism is widely practiced because of its fundamentality to the individual and supporters. It is only one of the seven sacraments that Christ inflicted on the church. Although baptism is not the most important sacrament in Christianity; however, it is one of the most essential parts. It occurs only once in a person's life. The purpose of Baptism is to designate the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. This purpose is to remove original sin, everyone is born with this sin due to the challenge of Adam and Eve. There are four predominant reasons why Baptism is crucial. These reasons are Christian societies, religious reflection, redemption and community development, and the main reason is a rite of passage for the individual. The ethics of Christians are based on baptism and the baptismal commitment. Christian takes part in two sacraments intended by God that celebrate what God has done for us, namely communion and baptism. Communion is celebrated on a reliable basis and baptism is a unique declaration of a lifetime of dedication to God. It has many aspects including: purification, burial, resurrection, death and birth of the new. Baptism is a religious ceremony that consists of purgative and consecrations. During this rite of passage these children and adults would be accepted by Christ and the church. The ethics of Christians are based both on baptism and on their commitment to it. The baptismal process of children is teaching in the faith, pouring holy water and contributing to Christian society. While adult baptism contains a reception rite and a selection rite that occurs during the first Sunday of Lent, and then they are finally initiated during a process called mystagogy. It derives from the Trinitarian formula recognized in the Bible by Matthew. Baptism is the first step among the other sacraments because it welcomes people through Christianity.
