Delancey Street was founded by Mimi Silbert and John Maher in 1971. It was a very small organization that started with just four residents. A $1000 loan kept this plan alive financially. The goal was to change the lives of poor people, who were fighting drug addiction and/or needed a second chance in society. It was a positive contribution to humanity that changed the lives of many. It all started with a small apartment in San Francisco. John Maher was a former criminal and Mimi Silbert had a doctorate in criminology. The idea was that everyone would “do their part” and contribute to the foundation. For someone who knew how to cook they would have the opportunity to become a head chef. If a person was good at building things, then he had the opportunity to become the “construction manager”. People were able to bring together their gifts and talents and create an organization that enriched themselves and others.
