Some people consider the Dalai Lama to be one of the most influential people in the entire world. Starting in a small one-story house in rural Tibet, as a young boy the Dalai Lama spoke only a broken Chinese dialect to his family. He made a big change in himself after, at the age of 2, it was discovered that he was destined to become the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet. The Dalai Lama is said to be the supreme ruler of the country and a renowned spiritual leader, admired by the people of Tibet. He grew up speaking a broken Chinese dialect which was very rare near his residence. Around the time Döndrub was two years old, the thirteenth Dalai Lama, Thubten Gyatso, died. According to legend, the body of the 13th Dalai Lama originally faced the southeast, but suddenly changed its position to the northeast due to a mysterious force. The regent, Reting Rinpoche, supposedly had a vision in which the 13th Dalai Lama's body pointed to his reincarnated soul. This directed people to the young Döndrub's parents' single-storey house with distinctive gutters and tiles. As a test, to see if this child was the next Dalai Lama, he was given an assortment of toys and other objects; some belonging to the Dalai Lama, some not.
