'Romeo and Juliet' is one of Shakespeare's most famous plays and one of the most famous romances written of all time. In this essay I will explore how Shakespeare emphasizes the inevitability of the lover's death, using a variety of different techniques. In the prologue Shakespeare famously refers to Romeo and Juliet as a pair of "starry lovers"; this suggests that fate will play an important role in the show even before the show begins. In the 19th century the stars were strongly linked to fate. Since the audience is already aware that the lovers will die, high levels of anxiety and dramatic irony will be created. The moral of the work is made clear by the refrain "the continuation of the anger of their parents, which if not the end of their children", nothing could remove". Is there a need for something as drastic as the death of their children to end the feud between Capulets and Montague. Shakespeare devises actions and events to underline the inevitability of the lover's death. As Romeo heads to the Capulets' ball, he has a premonition that this will be the beginning of a chain of events, which will lead to an "untimely death" "for my mind suspects some consequence, but it hangs among the stars" The Elizabethan audience would have believed strongly in predestination and there was no way Romeo could escape his untimely death Romeo mentions also that he is suspended among the stars, which would have reinforced the audience's thought that he would eventually die As the play progresses, Shakespeare offers some hope that the lovers will be saved, however each time fate is against them . If Mercutio had escaped death, Romeo would have had no reason to kill Tybalt. "Mercutio dying curses a plague on both your houses." This reminds me that... in the middle of the card... the class usually speaks like professionals. «If I profane this sacred sanctuary with my most unworthy hand, the gentle sin is this, my lips are two blushing pilgrims ready. To smooth the rough touch with a gentle kiss'. This sonnet also shows the love between Romeo and Juliet. At this point dramatic irony comes into play as the audience indulges in the love of Romeo and Juliet, but at the same time is afraid for them because they know that they will both take their own lives. Overall Shakespeare greatly emphasizes the inevitability of Romeo and Juliet's death, using a wide range of techniques. For a typical 19th century audience it will reinforce their beliefs in destiny; however a modern audience may not be attracted to the idea of destiny alone. A modern audience would watch the show primarily to see how it unfolds and how a love relationship can go from one extreme to the other..
