Ellenah Garcia Sellers English Block 3 Its story of adventure, magic and suspense captivates people of all ages. Shakespeare's popular masterpiece, The Tempest, is also a story of adventure, magic and suspense. Not only do their genres have a similar direction; their characters also do the same. Caliban and Gollum are similar because: they were both created from a dark source, they both have similar physical characteristics, and they also have very similar personalities. The characters in The Lord of the Rings are particularly similar to the characters in The Tempest. This is especially true for the two characters, Caliban and Gollum. Both characters are born in a similar way. In The Lord of the Rings, Gollum was a hobbit, a shorter, human-like person named Sméagol. Find the One Ring, a mystical ring that Sauron, a dark lord, creates so he can control the world. He is controlled by the ring and becomes obsessed with it. In The Tempest, Caliban is the son of a witch, Sycorax, and his father is the devil, according to Prospero. “Thou poisonous slave, taken by the devil himself / Upon thy wicked mother, come forth!” (I, ii, 391-393) Both characters are created by dark magic and dark people. Another similarity between Caliban and Gollum is their physical characteristics. Both are described as monsters, especially Caliban, who is called a monster numerous times by Trinculo. "I will laugh myself to death at this puppy-headed monster. Scurvy monster! I could find it in my heart to beat him..." (II, ii, 163-165) Gollum is also described as a "wretched creature" (book 1, ... in the middle of the card ... pray this dull fool!” (V, i, 357-360) Gollum also shows a kind of softness, especially to Frodo when he caresses Frodo's knee. and slowly reaching out with a trembling hand, very cautiously, he touched Frodo's knee - but the touch was almost a caress... one of the sleepers might have seen him, they would have thought they saw a tired old hobbit..." In conclusion, Caliban and Gollum are similar because they were created from dark sources, have physical similarities, and because they both behave similarly. Both characters, although placed in different scenarios and worlds, have a profound physical and physiological connection Gollum was perhaps based on Caliban is stronger than he may seem. Many books and films are based on Shakespeare's works, so perhaps this is just one of many.
