Certainly technology has always had an impact on both students and teachers in the classroom. Guttenberg's invention of the printing press in 1451 brought the printed word to the masses and made learning more accessible to the common man. The introduction of the pocket calculator in the 1970s freed professionals and students from the slide rule and made learning and performing mathematical calculations much less time consuming. Fast forward to today and the technological opportunities are astonishing. Students today carry around cell phones that are much more powerful and smaller in size than many early computers! Too often, many of these technologies—cell phones, personal music, and portable video game systems—are seen as distractions in the classroom. However there is a silver lining; There are many technologies that have the opportunity to significantly impact the educational experiences of all students. Information is now available in new and exciting ways. New technologies such as smart whiteboards, the Internet and e-books enable students to access, interact and carry with them information in new and exciting ways and, despite barriers such as cost, training and resistance to pedagogical change, can have an impact about student learning experiences in a variety of new and positive ways. Smart Boards A relatively new technology introduced into the classroom is the Smart Board. Part whiteboard, part touch screen computer, the Smart Board is an interactive multimedia device that allows the manipulation of on-screen programs that can directly improve student learning. Unlike previous tools such as whiteboards, projectors and computers, the Smart Board combines the best of each and allows you to educate......half the paper......that textbook publishers are purposely withholding from conversion of more traditional textbooks to e-books due to rights management concerns and fears that e-book sales will diminish their profits and the used textbook market (Woudstra, 2003). Despite these problems, however, it is clear that e-books offer a great advantage to students over traditional textbooks. The adoption of new technologies is never easy and the adaptation of educational pedagogy is also often difficult. The current addition of new technologies, including smart whiteboards, the Internet, and e-books, are the current technologies influencing today's classroom. Although they can often prove expensive, the benefits they offer to students have been clearly observed. These technologies help create a more dynamic and hands-on classroom environment that engages today's students.
