Droughts are natural events of nature and occur all over the world. A drought occurs when rainfall falls below normal standards in the area. This is mainly caused by above-average high pressure in the area. Droughts are periodic and have a habit of alternating with floods over a series of years. One of the effects of global warming is now predicted to be an increase in the frequency of droughts over the next two decades. The effects of drought are not often remembered as being directly linked to agricultural losses. Records usually focus on other problems, but lack of rainfall during droughts also affects wildlife and plant life, in addition to water shortages created for domestic needs. What people remember about the drought are crops damaged by low rainfall, high temperatures, strong winds, insect infestations and dust storms that soon follow drought conditions.
