In the story "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" written by Lisa See, we are introduced to characters in the story who change their attitude in certain situations in their lives. There are "triggers" in every character that make them grow as a person for better or worse. Women at this time had to follow the rules. In the book we are introduced to characters who break the mold of how women are viewed at this time. These women change and face internal conflicts. The first character we have is Snow Flower, then Lily and finally Madame Wang. First we have Lily who we see grow before our eyes. We see her relationship with Snow Flower blossom from when they were little girls into adulthood. I believe Lily had many triggers in her life, but I believe the main one was when she confronted her mother for not telling her about Snow Flowers' family and past. When it comes to Snow Flower, Lily sees her as a superior being. She had put Snowflower on a pedestal, even as a little girl, and couldn't get over the fact that Snowflower was just another human like her. When Lily discovered that her parents had been lying to her for ten years, she felt betrayed and couldn't understand why. He never thought that the person he thought so highly of lived in such a dump. The phase in Lily's life that stood up to her mother was shocking to me, but it was something Lily felt she had to do. “My body trembled with the emotions raging beneath my skin. Mother heard them and smiled with her intelligence. I dug my nails into her flesh as she had done to me. I kept my voice low so no one in the house could hear what I said. “You're a liar. You and all members of this family have deceived me. Did you think I wouldn't find out about Snow Flower?" (See 87). ......middle sheet ......friendship and what it means to be a woman. In a woman's life, there are ups and downs that change us as a person. We also begin to look out for the best interests of others and not just ourselves. In conclusion, "Snow Flower and the Secret Fan" shows a real struggle in the lives of children growing up to become women at this time. .It also shows a beautiful relationship between Snow Flower and Lily. We see each character grow in the situations they are presented with in their lives. Lily no longer wanted to sit back and let her mother rule her, so I feel like her standing up to her mother was remarkable of her.Also, Snow Flower fights against the odds despite her past.Finally, we have Madame Wang who looks out for the best interest of her nieces and shows a lot of strength and heart and every character changed because of it.
