Ninety-three percent of children between the ages of twelve and seventeen living in the United States of America use the Internet. Of the 93%, 38% of these children are in high school and hide their online activities from their parents (Roleff, 2012). Most children choose to use social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. These popular sites allow users to share photos and videos, as well as public and private messages. While social media on the Internet is a great way to connect with friends and loved ones, it can also lead to negative feedback and even cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can be defined as the use of technologies such as cell phones, emails, text messages, instant messaging, or social networking sites. Cyberbullying is often committed by children, but more specifically by adolescents (Roleff, 2012). A specific case of cyberbullying in 2003 led to the suicide of Ryan Patrick Halligan. Ryan was a student at Albert D. Lawton Middle School in Essex Junction, Vermont. Ryan's classmates and classmates began teasing and picking on him. Some of Ryan's friends also began to bully him. She couldn't free herself from the emotional abuse because the bullying started to happen online too. Ryan often accessed AOL Instant Messenger, better known as AIM. At this point Ryan couldn't escape criticism from his peers, because even when he was alone in his room, with the click of a button negative comments and threats flooded his computer screen. Although his parents were aware that Ryan was being bullied at school, they had no idea that he was being cyberbullied. This is an example of something that can happen to a child without a parent even knowing that their child is being cyberbullied. ...... middle of paper ...... lp or talk about how they feel and how they are treated. It is important to have a friend or parent be there for a child who is receiving cyber attacks. victim of bullying. Children who are victims of cyberbullying don't know what to do with themselves, some children think that if they just hurt themselves, it's okay. But in these cases this is not the case, so if a friend or parent is close to him to comfort him and give him support, the child will realize that he is not alone. If someone is a victim of cyberbullying, they can turn to interventions, these interventions talk about who is doing it and how to stop it. A child should undergo these surgeries to help him vent out all the feelings and anger. A child should not feel alone or unsafe. Children should also turn to their parents if they experience cyberbullying, because if they don't it can lead to suicide.
