Additionally, Weber thought that rationality was useful for organizations to operate efficiently. He knew that even in modern societies rationality would spread to more and more societies because it was necessary for organizations to operate efficiently. However, he also feared that this would increase the control of the individual by limiting human action. These were some of the characteristics identified by both Durkheim and Weber as distinctive of the modern era. The reason these processes play such an important role in modern society is because they have helped society evolve and as time goes by these processes get better and better helping society progress. For example, Durkheim's division of labor played a key role in solidarity which was reflected in organic solidarity. It has helped societies evolve from simple to complex leading to today's social integration. Perhaps if it were not for this change society's social systems would not be as coordinated as they are in many societies. It has created a collective dependency on working with each other which helps in the long run
