“Are you counting on your tomorrow?” This is a simple yes or no question, but the answer is largely based on a person's beliefs, morals, and worldview. Sigmund Freud and CS Lewis were two of the greatest minds of the twentieth century, and the two come together in the play Freud's Last Session. Sigmund Freud was born in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1856. Supporter or no supporter, everyone agrees that Freud was one of the most influential scientists of the 20th century. Freud focused primarily on the interaction of the conscious and unconscious mind. Not only did it transform psychology; it transformed the way people see themselves and the way they think about their lives (A Science Odyssey). Unlike Freud's secular, atheistic worldview, the other great mind, C.S. Lewis, saw the world spiritually. C.S. Lewis was the most popular advocate of reason-based faith of the 20th century. As a child, he created an imaginary world in which personified animals came to life and later wrote the book Chronicles of Narnia. How did he transform from a boy fascinated by anthropomorphic animals into a man of immense faith? His transformation to the Christian religion occurred when his fame began to flourish. People wrote to him asking about his claims about the truth of Christianity (Belmonte, Kevin). As I witnessed the drama of Freud's Last Session, I was engrossed in the plot of the work and constantly thought about how it related to the objectives of the World Literature course. Not only did I connect the content of the work to its context, but I also tried to apply the context to a larger-scale discussion. I then discovered why the context of literature is crucial to the true understanding of w...... middle of paper ...... tivation; and where we are going, our destiny. (The question of God) Context is of fundamental importance because without the context to support the content, the story is nothing; it doesn't mean anything. Literature is so great because it transforms how we think and influences what we believe. Without context, literature is nothing. Without literature to express our vision of the world, we are nothing. Works Cited Belmonte, Kevin. Who is C.S. Lewis. C.S. Lewis Foundation. 2013.
