The boundaries of race, gender, and religion fell away as class became society's most important delineator. (Hagen Landry 2) The perfect world is one with no flaws in society, no corruption in politics, and no discrepancies among the people of that world, otherwise known as utopia. However, these types of companies often collapse. A dystopia often has the illusion of a perfect society (Dystopia), but an overbearing governing body often drives and masks corruption by controlling and brainwashing members of society into believing that everything is as it should be and that there is no they are absolutely chapped. On February 4 of this year, Bethany Hagen released her debut novel Landry Park, which happens to be about dystopian America. Bethany Hagen was born twenty-six years ago in Kansas City, Kansas. (Hagen Personal) Not only was she born in Kansas City, she also grew up there. (Cover by Hagen Landry) Hagen became a librarian and loves being able to grab a book off the shelf that seems like a good read whenever she feels like it. She came across many story ideas this way. There is something magical about spending time in a building with your favorite books,” Hagen responded during a personal interview. (Hagen Personal) At a young age, Ms. Hagen was diagnosed with narcolepsy; she says this sometimes hinders her writing. One interesting activity that Hagen said she enjoys is Kenpō. Kenpō is one of many forms of martial arts. Hagen said he has a black belt in the sport. (Hagen Personal)You could ask Bethany Hagen, what was her inspiration behind such a unique novel: her first answer took her back to her childhood. Hagen grew up reading Jane Auste... in the middle of the newspaper... ff. (Hagen Landry 46) Two hundred years before Landry Park was born, there was a civil war. The winners of this war were able to choose the best plots of land to build large and imaginative properties. These victors were the Uprisen. (Hagen Personal) Winning the war is what also gave the Gentry the power to rule the country. The Gentry hid their treatment of the lower classes from the rest of society and were the cause of the transition from a utopian society to a dystopian society. The political issues of Landry Park lie with the Gentry and their method of government. As stated previously, the Gentry pass governmental control through each family's eldest heir. This heir has absolutely no choice whether to accept this position or not. At eighteen the heir, or debutante, can contract marriage and must marry before the age of twenty-one. (Hagen Staff)
