Sensory perception allows us to select and interpret information collected through our senses and, with this information, gain knowledge of the world around us. Our five basic senses are sight, smell, hearing, touch and taste, however our senses can expand to include other aspects that we humans find difficult to assess, such as heat, pain, hunger and balance. Sensory perception, however, is not flawless but rather constrained by individual limitations and biases, which represent a weakness. However, since our senses are actively at play, consistently and constantly recording data from the outside world, it is easily the most fundamental way to gain knowledge, and only through our senses are we able to achieve knowledge through other means. Therefore, regarding the fields of arts and natural sciences, the strengths compensate for the weaknesses of sensory perception as a way of knowing and will be explored in depth in the following paragraphs. One of the weaknesses of sensory perception is the limited capacity of our sensory apparatus, resulting in greater dependence on technology, often misleading our senses. Unlike bats which can hear frequencies up to 120,000 hertz, we are limited to 20,000 hertz and, unlike snakes which are able to see infrared light, our sense of sight is limited by the visible light spectrum . In the natural sciences, these restrictions are barriers that prevent scientists from observing and conducting experiments that go beyond our senses. Yet discoveries are still being made today in areas beyond the reach of our senses, such as discoveries regarding subatomic particles. Because our senses are limited, scientists often rely on science… the focus of the article… acquiring knowledge. In conclusion, sensory perception has been valued as a way of knowing in the areas of arts and natural sciences and is evidently an essential form of acquiring knowledge despite its weaknesses. The tendency of our senses and perception to be partial and subjective as a form of weakness in the arts, as open to misinterpretations of the artist's intent, can also be considered a strength. Because the arts can only thrive where there is individual thought in perceiving and creating art. Furthermore, sensory perception is capable of overcoming its limitations and restrictions as it actively detects, sorts, and interprets information, allowing discoveries to be made when otherwise deemed impossible in the natural sciences. Therefore, although the strengths of sensory perception are limited, they outweigh its weaknesses.
