Fire Fighting Imagine you are sleeping and it is a normal night like any other, when suddenly you smell smoke from your bedroom. You immediately open the door and see nothing due to the heavy layer of smoke. Your first reaction is to call the fire department and within minutes they show up at your house. Some firefighters begin battling the flames engulfing your home, while others rush into the flames looking for you and anyone else in your household, including your pets. This is just another day at the office for the fire department, but it's a traumatic event for you and you can't thank the firefighters enough for saving your life. Historically, firefighters have been our modern first responders and are the bravest and most loyal people in society today. One issue circulating in the media, however, is that firefighters are going over budget to put out fires. The definition of a forest fire is a large destructive fire that spreads rapidly through woods or bushes. To put out any type of fire, you need to eliminate any of the three components that fuel it, including heat, oxygen and fuel. What most civilians don't know is that most fires have the potential to extinguish themselves, which saves money, health risks, and resources. So why do firefighters continue to spend money putting out fires? Due to excessive spending on limited natural resources and taxpayer money, fire departments should change their approach to extinguishing natural fires or wildland fires. Most people don't know that Benjamin Franklin was the first to have the idea of a fire department. He saw that the techniques, at the time, for fighting fires were very ineffective and proposed a n...... middle of paper...... decreasing the number of personnel on duty, the more firefighters are at risk of overworked. Another point to include is that firefighters may need additional resources if the fire gets out of hand and firefighters need to put it out quickly. All in all, firefighters could change a couple of protocols to help save money, lives and natural resources, but is it worth the risk of experimenting and being unprepared? Over the course of my studies I have gained a lot of knowledge and insight into what firefighters face, along with what could be done to reduce the possibility of firefighters going over budget. Letting fires go out seems like a good idea written down on paper, but unfortunately it gets more and more complicated. However, fire departments should look into better tactics for extinguishing fires in order to stay within their budget.
