In the film Shutter Island, Leonardo DiCaprio is portrayed as a US Marshal brought to Ashecliffe to investigate the disappearance of a patient, but it is later brought to his attention that he is actually a patient at Ashecliffe. DiCaprio, also known as Teddy Daniels or Andrew Laeddis, is haunted by a horrible past that has caused psychological problems to develop and appear. Throughout the film, DiCaprio's character constantly negatively influences the people around him due to his illness. He also conjures up stories and has delusions so that he doesn't have to face the truth about his life and what he had done in his past. Eventually, he comes to the realization of the truth, but it doesn't last long and all his progress regresses. Someone watching this movie wouldn't find out until the end that Teddy/Andrew experienced things in his past that could have triggered these psychological issues. In the film we learn that he was a soldier during the Battle of Normandy and invaded a death camp but found that it was too late to save many people's lives. He and his unit executed many German soldiers at this camp. We also learn that Teddy comes home to his wife one afternoon after work and finds that his wife has killed their children in the lake behind their house. Seeing his children floating face down in the water he rushes and brings them back to the yard but it is already too late to save them. Dolores asks her husband to bring the children into their home so they can become dolls to play with and Teddy makes the decision to kill his wife for killing their children. Much of the film is about how DiCaprio's character influences other people. He does everything to get to... middle of the paper... his life away from himself. Finally, when Teddy finally realizes the truth, he quickly loses all his progress and forgets everything. Throughout the movie, it seemed like Teddy was a normal guy until the end of the movie when he ends up being a real patient at Ashecliffe and most of the movie was his delusions. “[Teddy's medical records stated] that the patient is very intelligent. Highly delusional. Decorated Army Veteran. Present for the free...liberation of Dachau. Former US Marshal. Known propensity for violence. He shows no remorse for his crime because he denies that the crime ever… ever happened. Highly developed and fantastical narratives that preclude addressing the truth of his actions.
