What is beauty? People have always tried to find it, create it, and pursue it. A quick grocery store purchase will reveal a myriad of magazines dedicated exclusively to what they call beauty and the proper pursuit of it. Most have an idea of what they might personally define as beauty, but not as a general, broad definition. What one might call ugly, another might call absolutely amazing. Some find beauty in cats, others in dogs, just as some prefer early morning mountain ranges to the setting sun on the plains. “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” is the favorite adage cited by many to explain this discrepancy, but what does that quickly spat out phrase mean? In reality, although the adage is partially true, beauty is not relative or subject to our human whim: it is an ideal created and truly achieved only by God, which as His children we must reflect in love. With a brief analysis, the adage "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder" perfectly explains and blends with our personal self, our culture and the world today. What do people mean when they say this adage? To understand this, we need to take a closer look at the three crucial words in the phrase: beauty, eye, and spectator. First of all, what is beauty? According to the Merriam-Webster online dictionary, “beauty is the quality or set of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasantly exalts the mind or spirit” (1). Pleasure is the key word in that definition, implying that the beauty of something is relative to the personal pleasure one feels from it. The next word is “eye,” which does not mean the literal eye, but refers to the perception, method, and personal mindset through which beauty is seen. Finally, the use of "observer" in...... center of the card...... uses the old metaphor, we are all blind, who feel and describe different but important parts of the elephant of beauty as God guide our hands. He is the ultimate truth and the standard by which we determine truth. God is love (1 John 4:8) and therefore the standard by which we determine what is and is not loving. God created beauty, a very good thing, and therefore God is beautiful. If even pagans find His works glorious and breathtaking, how much more beautiful it must be! Therefore, as children of the Creator of beauty, striving to be “conformed to the image of His Son” (Romans 8:29), we must display His beauty—His love—in all areas of our lives. Works Cited1.
