Due to the suitors' lack of courtesy and respect towards Penelopeia, she seems to take on an overall passive role in the story. Her specific character had no say in any case, even if in the end she was the “prize” to be won. However, to get what she wants, Penelope repeatedly tries to deceive all the suitors, making them believe that she has control over what is happening. And although Penelopeia seems like a helpless victim, in reality she is exactly the opposite. Taking control of every situation possible, Penelopeia hopes that Odysseus will return to put an end to all this chaos. First of all, Penelopeia did not want the 117 suitors to stay in her home and become dependent on her family's wealth and resources. . Her wishes, however, were not taken into consideration when the suitors decided to do so. And although Penelopeia was a good host, the suitors never showed her any respect. So when the suitors set a deadline for Penelopeia to choose a suitor to marry, she almost immediately found a way around the problem. When the suitors told Penelopeia that she should choose a husband, "she put a great warp on the loom in her mansion, wove [...] and said [to the suitors], '[...] wait until I finish this cloth [...] is a shroud for my lord Laertes, against the time when the destructive fate shall take him away in painful death'” (Homer 18). The clever part of his suggestion was that every night Penelopeia would unravel ... the center of the card... the double bed cannot be moved, because it is part of their house, he orders the nurse to do so, Ulysses almost goes completely mad, shouting at Penelopeia for even considering a such a silly idea, which shows Penelopeia that Odysseus is indeed the man she married many years ago. Thanks to her second proof, Penelopeia is able to see that Odysseus still remembers the secret of their bed that Ulysses remained the same as before leaving Ithaca. There are many points in the Odyssey where one might believe Penelopeia isn't strong or smart enough to handle, but she finds a way around each of them. event and comes out the winner.
