In Issues in African Imperial Histories, historians Gan and Duignan, Walter Rodney, and A. Adu Boahen discussed colonialism in Africa. Each historian has explained a different view on the impact of the European empire on Africa. The views of Walter Rodney and A. Adu Boahen stood out the most. Colonial rule contributed to the exploitation of Africa and led to socioeconomic development. Rodney expresses the negative impact on Africa. Boahen explains the negative and positive aspects of colonial rule. Walter Rodney believed that colonial rule contributed to the exploitation of Africa. “In fact, what the colonialists called “the development of Africa” was a cynical expression for “the intensification of colonial exploitation in Africa to develop capitalist Europe” (Rodney, p.295). During colonial rule the greatest negative impact for Africa was the loss of power. Power is the main deterrent to the prosperity of a society. When a society has no power it is not developed.
