Today's society gets almost all of its information from the media. Since the media is mostly owned by a few companies, opinions and ideas can be shaped by what you see on the Internet, on television and in newspapers. Due to monopolization by those few companies that own what is seen and read, it becomes quite easy for the general public to immediately believe what is seen just because “the journalist said so”. The mass media not only has a huge and dangerous impact on how society views politics and members of society, but also on how the media can influence young people. “The media has existed in America since 1690, when the first newspaper in the United States, Publick Occurrences, Both Foreign and Domestick, was published” (“Milestones…”). Since 1690, media has grown to unexpected numbers. “There are six corporations in America that own more than ninety percent of what we listen to, read, and watch, compared to the fifty corporations that controlled the majority of American news media in 1983. The “Big Six,” which includes : Time Warner, which owns networks such as HBO and TNT, which controls ESPN and Disney Channel Viacom; , which leads Comedy Central and MTV; which operates Fox and DIRECTV Corporation, which owns CBS News; and finally NBC Universal, which is responsible for MSNBC and Weather Channel what is watched, as opposed to the other three thousand seven hundred plus companies that control the remaining thirty percent.
