One of the reasons most have them is for the eggs, chickens produce around 1 egg per day depending on the breed. When you raise your chickens you control what they eat and they give you wonderful eggs in return. Most people think it is the same as an egg we buy at the market, well that's not the case. If you've ever had a farm fresh egg, you won't want to buy store eggs again. The eggs you buy at the market come from farms, but from farmers who mass produce. These poor chickens are raised only to provide eggs; they are usually in a box/cage or room with many, many other chickens. Only feed a mix which is usually the cheapest, no bugs, no grass. I mean, eggs are "normal". They are shipped to a warehouse where they sit and wait to be shipped to markets around the world. They have an expiration date because the FDA requires it. Fresh eggs can sit on the counter without refrigeration for weeks, as long as they aren't fertilized. A chicken that has access to an enclosure with bugs, worms, grass, and treats gets a little extra, so it produces an egg that has a deep yellow/orange yolk. It's much tastier than a store-bought egg. Chickens can also be considered pets, I picture myself with a cup of tea sitting outside near my garden with chickens wandering around. As I would with my dogs or cats, they will come to you; children can also take them
